Multiple Captains in the Team

March 28th, 2009

There has been a new line of discussion initiated by John Buchanan, the former Australian cricket coach where he says a team could have multiple captains in the same game. These would act like specialist captains in each facet of the game.

For example, one would be a fielding captain, the other a bowling captain keeping his eye on the bowling changes etc. Before I even head towards putting in my two cents on the topic, I have to know one thing. Has the game got that boring?

I mean, first they didn’t like the longer version of the game so they came in with 60-over cricket. That got two long so they have 50-overs. Even that was too much to take so they said lets make it 20-20. Then came IPL and Stanford 20-20 and what not. They have made this gentleman’s game into a freak show.

I sometimes feel, these ideas come up when there is not enough news to talk about. This is indirectly linked to the excessive media we have these days. So many news channels obviously need news to tell. If they cant find one, they make one. If they cant make it themselves, they pay somebody to make one.

Anyway, back to topic.

This is a ridiculous thought and should go to the dustbin as soon as possible. We have egoistic issues with former captains in the team making it tough for the current captain. It starts all well with respect being given to all opinions but it cant stay like that for a long time.

Another issue might be at times of crisis when the whole team needs to follow one leader, who do they follow. There are already issues with silos within the camp, I think this will create silos within the playing eleven.

A more appropriate approach would be to find one bloke who has a got a good head on his shoulders and who understands the game well. Moreover, if he has respect within the team, you have your man. He may not be the best player in the team but he has to be the best leader.

A captain should be a specialist role just like a batsman, a bowler, a wicketkeeper etc. If a captain can do either of the other elements of the game that’s a great news but he should be judged for his captaincy. I think that’s a better thing to do than having multiple captains. What do you think?
